About Smoke Alarms

Why Hire a Professional to Install a Smoke Detector?

When it comes to fire safety, there’s no room for guesswork. A qualified electrician knows exactly where to install your smoke alarms for maximum coverage — like near kitchens, bedrooms, or escape routes — without false alarms going off every time you toast a crumpet.

More importantly, a proper install meets UK safety laws and ensures your alarms are wired or interconnected correctly. That means if one goes off, they all do — giving everyone more time to get out safely.

Trying to fit them yourself? It might seem simple, but even small mistakes (like placing them too close to steam or heat) can make them useless. Leave it to someone trained in the regs and safety codes — your family’s safety is worth it.

Domestic & Rental Property Compliance

For homeowners, it’s about peace of mind. For landlords, it’s the law.

UK regulations — including the BS 5839-6 standard — require working smoke alarms on every floor of a home. If you’re renting out a property, especially an HMO (House in Multiple Occupation), you must have mains-powered alarms with battery backup and interconnected coverage.

Having good coverage means more than just one alarm by the stairs. A professional can ensure each room is assessed correctly, including lounges and sleeping areas. That way, no one’s caught off guard in an emergency.

Plus, compliance keeps you on the right side of insurance policies and council inspections. Skipping it? You could face hefty fines — or worse, put lives at risk.

Reviews

Callum Umpleby

Awesome service, from choosing what we needed doing and professional recommendations to implementing our plan! Wont be going anywhere else for electrical services in Worksop.

Emma

Callum came to do the electrics down to our Summerhouse in 2021. The work was carried out on time and to a high standard. Everything was left neat and tidy, you would never have known he had been there. He did a wonderful job and as a result has done work for several of our neighbours too.

Jor

Callum completed our 1st and 2nd fix for our extension, advising on all aspects of lighting and electrical gadgetry. Wouldn’t use anyone else for our electrical works. He later completed a full install in the shed with great safety features

Rachael

Very professional service and such a pleasant guy. We would definitely recommend Callum.

FAQs

At a minimum, you need one smoke alarm per floor. But best practice (especially under BS 5839-6) recommends placing them in hallways, lounges, and any rooms people sleep in.

If you’re in a larger home or rental, interconnected alarms across all key areas are the safest bet.

Place smoke alarms on the ceiling, at least 30cm away from walls or lights. Avoid kitchens and bathrooms unless you’re using heat or specialist alarms, to reduce false alarms.

Main areas include:

  • Hallways and landings

  • Living rooms

  • Bedrooms (especially for rented homes)

Battery-powered alarms? Maybe. But for mains-wired or interconnected alarms, UK law requires a qualified electrician.

Improper installation can leave gaps in coverage or cause faults — which could void insurance or fail council checks.

Most smoke alarms last 8–10 years. After that, the internal sensor becomes less reliable, even if it still beeps.

Check the expiry date printed on the back — and replace old units on time.

  • Test it once a month

  • Gently vacuum it every 6 months to clear dust

  • Replace the battery annually (if not sealed)

  • Never paint over it

A working alarm can be the difference between a close call and a tragedy — treat it like any other safety system in your home.
